What is this video actually for?

How a Video Actually Gets Made

Five steps, in the order they actually happen. Scroll to move through them.

  1. What is this video actually for?

Before anything is opened, one question: what should happen after someone clicks? Watch it to the end, share it, subscribe, buy something, or simply feel something. That answer decides the length, the pace and every decision that follows.

Most edits go wrong here - they optimise for looking good rather than for the thing you asked for.

  2. The shape before the detail

I write the skeleton while watching the footage: hook, tension, turn, resolution. Three to five beats, each with a job. Once that holds, the cuts have somewhere to go. Without it, an edit is just a pile of good moments in the wrong order.

A rough outline takes ten minutes and saves a full round of revisions.

  3. Deciding what to leave out

Every second that does not earn its place is removed. That is the whole craft - not adding effects, but knowing when a shot has said its piece. Silence, a held frame and a hard cut often do more than another transition.

Good pacing is felt, not noticed.

  4. The part that makes it feel finished

Then the grade, matched across every shot so the video looks like one piece of film rather than a folder of clips. Music is chosen for the feeling and cut to the beat, not faded in and left running.

Sound carries about half of how polished a video feels.

  5. The promise the edit has to keep

The thumbnail and the edit are the same job at two different moments. The thumbnail is the promise; the first ten seconds have to keep it. Designed together, they match in colour and framing, and the drop-off after the click drops with them.

Three versions, because the strongest thumbnail is a choice, not a first idea.

Questions, Answered

Everything clients ask before the first project

How long does one video take?

A typical 8 to 12 minute edit comes back in two to three days. Short-form clips for Reels, Shorts and TikTok turn around within 24 hours. If a deadline is tighter than that, say so before we start and I will tell you honestly whether it is realistic.

What do you need from me to start?

The raw footage, any reference videos you like, and a sentence about what the video should achieve - sell, explain, or entertain. If you already have written text or a script, that saves a day. If not, I can write the structure from a rough outline.

Do you work on footage shot on a phone?

Yes, and it is more common than professional footage. Phone video is usually well exposed and well focused, which is most of what matters. What it often lacks is clean audio and stabilisation, and I handle both in post.

How many revisions are included?

Two rounds of revisions are included in every package, which covers nearly every project. During those rounds I change anything that is about taste - pacing, music, colours, text, timing. Changes to the actual idea or story structure are treated as new work, because that is a different job.

Do you design thumbnails as well as edit?

Yes, and they work better together. Editing and thumbnails are the same skill applied to different moments - the thumbnail is the promise, the edit has to keep it. Designing both means the two match in colour and framing, which lifts click-through and lowers the drop-off straight after.

What do you need for a thumbnail?

The title, the single moment from the video that best represents it, and any text that must appear. You do not need a design brief. I will send three versions, because the strongest thumbnail is usually a choice rather than a single idea.

Can you add subtitles and translations?

Yes. Subtitles are included as an editable file as standard. Translations into Urdu, Hindi or Arabic are available, and I can burn them in or supply a separate file depending on where you are posting.

What about copyright or stolen music?

All music comes from a licensed library and every source is listed in the project file. If you want a specific commercial track, send me the licence and I will use it. I will not use anything that puts your channel at risk of a claim.

Do you offer a discount for long-term work?

Yes. A regular editing schedule is cheaper per video than one-off work, because I already know your channel, your pacing and your style. For four or more videos a month I would put together a monthly package.

How do we pay, and when?

Half up front to book the slot, half when the first draft is delivered. Payment by bank transfer or through Fiverr, whichever is easier. I am not set up to take card details directly, so those two are the options.

Still not sure something? Ask me directly - there is no such thing as a silly question before a project.
